Benefits of being real in business
Whether you are a business owner or an employee, being authentic could not be more critical to your success. The information age has bombarded us with ways to be seen, heard and promoted, but with so many of us out there it's hard to weed through it all. We have lost trust in advertising, promotions and one another. All of which has brought us to the intuition age.
Being real will bring you:
- Sustainable relationships
- Growth through referrals
- A reputation you can live up to
- Customers who feel at ease
Being "real" is important in making a connection sustainable. If either person comes to the table with anything but authenticity, the likelihood that the relationship will last without serious effort is small. Connecting in a space that is not authentic takes effort and after awhile, will power runs out.
This Wired magazine article cites a study that refers to this as "ego depletion", this concept can be applied to both business and personal relationships. If you establish the relationship, i.e., a job, a client, a friend, with a false personas your will power is being taxed.
Creating a relationship that is easy to be real in and authentically delivers what you have to offer, will help the relationship sustain itself for a long time to come.
A quote I have displayed in my office is "The biggest mistake people make in life is NOT trying to make a living at doing what they most enjoy." - Malcolm Forbes
When you are happy in your jobs, people feel it. You can get up in the morning, excited to face the day and effortlessly pass that on to your clients and companies. You are naturally more successful, because you find satisfaction in the things you do. It doesn't mean you like doing everything you must do, but you do like the outcome doing it produces. Let's face it, few of us like to do the dishes, but we like to eat and sometimes, one comes with the other.
When you aren't being true to yourself, you run out of fuel. When it's unsatisfying for us to engage in activities, you start feeling miserable. The misery will spread quickly to your health, personal life and clients.
Growth through referrals
My business is 99% referral-driven. People like telling friends and family about great experiences. They like to share the joy of the experience by asking others to experience it too.
When you are real with your clients they feel it and want to support you. They want the world to see the authentic gifts you offer and to line you up with people who can benefit from them. The whole world doesn't need you, just your clients who are authentically connected to you. By growing a referral business, you know you are attracting people who are in alignment with what your true self has to offer.
A reputation you can live up to
When you are yourself 100% of the time, the quality of your work improveso. This isn't to say you won't have your "off" days. But if you're real, not pretending that you're perfect 100% of the time, but allowing yourself to show up the best you are able every day, you will create a reputation that can builds over time, without the effort of being something you are not.
Customers who feel at ease
When you show up, comfortable with yourself as who you are, you allow the people around you to let their guard down too. This creates an ease that everyone feels. This takes the effort out of the whole exchange and allows for the real work to get done.
So let's get to it. Let's get real.
