How do you know what you know?

July 2009 033Last night my four year old asked me, “Mommy, how do we know what we know?”. Ah, the profound questions of a child. My husband said out loud what I was already thinking, “that would make a great blog”. Contemplating what it means to know.  Here are a few words the Microsoft Word thesaurus has for know: identify, understand, realize, grasp, experience, see, tell, distinguish, and recognize. Wow! As I read for people however, I see people constantly questioning what they know, how they know it and whether or not it is “right”. Walking the path, but not sure it is the right path or the right direction on the path. How do they know how to put one foot in front of the other? How do they know where they are headed?

So how do we know what we know? Part of it is just that it resonates with us.  What feels true to us. Information we can be with, without it causing disharmony in us about it not making sense. When something doesn’t make sense, we will do anything to prove it to ourselves. We will tell all of our friends and family and see if they agree. We might research it to find evidence of the facts. We might even do something to make it truer to ourselves like buy something, make something or make a drastic change to something.

The biggest trick to this however is that what we know changes. So if we know it, how can it change? Isn’t the truth the truth and that is it? Nope and the more flexible we are with what we know, the more open minded we can be about the world around us, the more of it we can experience.

Insightful Inspiration for the week

Contemplate this four year old’s question for yourself.  How do you know what you know? Pick a thought pattern that governs a good part of your life. For example, “I have to have a job to pay my bills.” This thought may seems completely logical and make total sense to you. But pick it a part a bit. There is no harm in questioning it. If in the end it is still true to you, it is. There is nothing you have to do with this thought, but notice where it comes from and how you know it.

Ask yourself does it still make sense to you today? What do you do to prove it to yourself? How hard do you have to work at proving it? Is it still serving you? What if it wasn’t true? What would that mean for your life? Would you be glad to be done with that thought if you could? Why can’t you be done with it? What would happen to your life if you let it go? How many people in your life believe this thought also?

Can you tap into the joy of life by questioning your reality?

Have a joyous week.  The universe loves you.
