Enlightenment Guides in the Most Unlikely Places

People with titles like guru, teacher, yogi, monk, priest, etc. are people you might go to for some spiritual help. They might be people who can help guide you toward the path to enlightenment.

While spiritual masters and guides are helpful, true helpers in our life often don't come from the likely sources. They aren't always the ones you want to say "thank you" to and aren't always obvious gifts. You might find more enlightenment in facing a chain reaction of events brought into your life through an encounter with a person, rather than from a spiritual master.

For example, lets say you get a job that you need very badly. In this job you are unhappy, but it pays the bills. Part of the reason you are unhappy is because you have a boss who is just awful to you. Finally one day, this boss is so awful to you that you snap and tell them off, causing you to loose your job. Then you have to face finding a new job and the financial struggles that comes along with it. In the end, you find a job you love that pays better and supports who you are. You gained wisdom about your strength through the struggles to get there. You were taught lessons you couldn't learn any other way.

Thanking and forgiving these people can help us to let go of any negative emotions we may be holding on to and help us move forward on our journey. Can you thank that boss for being the catalyst for your growth? Can you see the wisdom in their involvement in your life?

This isn't a sugar coated avoidance technique to make everyone and everything in your life seem good. This is about having awareness of the wisdom that is constantly around you, working with you and for you. This is about noticing the gifts rather than denying them. Even when you are struggling.

Take some time today to reflect on the catalysts for growth in your own life. What lessons have they taught you?

Time for some genuine shadow work.

Become aware of your catalysts for growth.

Here are some questions to consider:

  • Who in your life has caused a chain reaction of events that you find unpleasant?

  • Who do you have trouble with because of all the struggle they bring?

  • What are they a catalyst for?

  • Could you consider they are just showing you how you don't want to be?

Maybe the situation you are in has all the perfect healers in them. They are inviting you reevaluate your life. See if you can find the gift in the chain reaction they have set off for you. Decide if you want to learn your lessons or keep the chain going. (Hint: Your higher self wants the lesson or you wouldn't be there with it.) Send the people who bug you the most gratitude, forgiveness, and love. Then, do the same for yourself!
