Our Unconscious Mantras Create Our Reality
What Is an Unconscious Mantra?
A mantra is a word or formula, often from the Vedas, chanted or sung as an incantation or prayer.

But you don’t have to be meditating to use mantras, you already have them. An unconscious mantra is the automatic self-talk you repeat without awareness. These phrases work like little prayers to the universe, sending signals that attract more of the same into your life.
In short: Your thoughts are your incantations and they are shaping your reality.
How I Noticed My Own Negative Mantra
When I feel stressed and overwhelmed, I often catch myself saying to my husband:
“I don’t have enough time.”
“I can’t take it!”
According to the law of attraction, these statements are energetic requests for more lack of time and more overwhelm. And I’ve noticed something powerful: when I say “I can’t take it”, everything seems to stall. Business slows down, friendships pause, and family energy disconnects. My mantra literally blocks the flow I’ve built.
Shifting From Stress to Choice
Here’s the truth, I like what I have around me, I just want to handle it with more ease. That’s where conscious affirmations come in.
Instead of repeating “I can’t take it”, I intentionally create mantras that put the choice back in my hands.
For example:
“I choose to not use my time on that today.”
“I choose to address this, even though it feels uncomfortable, because I want to invest energy here.”
Simple shifts help redirect energy toward empowerment rather than stress.
Common Negative Mantras We All Use
Do any of these sound familiar?
“I can’t do it.”
“I’m overloaded.”
“I have to take care of everyone.”
“Life’s not fair.”
“People are always ______ (negative statement).”
“Life is hard.”
“I’ll never find a ______ (job, partner, home, peace, etc.).”
“I can’t afford it.”
Another sign of an unconscious mantra is the absence of choice. If your phrase includes “should” or “have to,” it’s worth re-examining.
How to Spot Your Own Unconscious Mantras
Start paying attention to what you say when stressed or when justifying your actions to others.
Try writing them down each time they appear. Or, ask trusted friends or family to help reflect them to you. Be prepared, you may feel the urge to defend or justify them! Instead, practice simply noticing without judgment.
How to Rewrite Your Mantras
Once you identify your unconscious mantras, ask yourself:
If a genie granted me this as reality, would I want it?
If not, it’s time to create conscious, supportive affirmations. To do this, explore the following:
What unmet need is this mantra pointing to?
Is the need emotional, mental, spiritual, or physical?
How can I transform this need into a positive, empowering mantra?
For example:
From “I’m overloaded” → “I am allowed to prioritize how I spend my time and energy. I choose wisely on my own behalf.”
From “Life is hard” → “I am resilient and have handled all of life’s challenges so far.”
Don’t forget to check in with your internal tone of voice. Can you can say the same thing to yourself with a kinder, gentler tone?
Reinforcing New Affirmations
Because old mantras tend to surface in high-stress moments, it’s important to practice your new ones during calmer times. Build them into your daily routine so they become second nature.
Ways to reinforce your affirmations:
Post sticky notes where you’ll see them daily.
Turn them into your computer or phone password.
Share inspiring quotes that echo your mantra on social media.
Ask friends to cue you by saying something like “swap it up” if they hear the old mantra.
Create a graphic or meme that represents your mantra and display it.
The more often you repeat your new mantras, the easier they’ll be to call on when stress hits.
Final Thoughts: Reclaiming Your Personal Power
Your unconscious mantras are like background prayers, constantly shaping your energy and your life. By noticing them, rewriting them into affirmations you do want, and practicing them regularly, you can shift your reality and step into greater personal power.
