Why "Energy Healing" Is Trending Right Now (And What Your Resistance Has to Do With It)
If you've found yourself Googling "energy healing" lately, you're not alone. Search interest in the term just hit an all-time high. So did searches for "how to be spiritual." Something is shifting, and millions of people are turning to their search bar to make sense of it.
Here’s my take: after years of sitting across from people in session, I think we’re collectively overwhelmed. Increasingly, that overwhelm is showing up in the body (not just the mind). That's not just an energy healer's opinion anymore either. The somatic therapy field, which treats the body as the entry point for healing, is projected to nearly triple in size by 2032. People are catching on that talking about a problem and actually releasing it from your system are two very different things.
So if your body is where the stress lives, how do you know when something is stuck vs. just passing through? In my work, I look for one signal above all others: resistance.
What Resistance Actually Tells You
If you find yourself resisting how the world is right now, this is great! No…really, this is information about what is coming to the surface to heal.
Resistance shows up in the energy field constantly and I use it as a diagnostic tool. If someone tells me "I want this new job," I can feel whether they actually believe that sentence or if there's a wall behind it. When I'm doing energy work with someone, I can feel the moment their system pushes back a little. This tells me they're right at the edge of what they can integrate. Resistance is how I find the programs running quietly in the background that are no longer serving my clients.
Here's a common one: "I have to work in this field, it's what I've always done." Except…the jobs aren't coming and the doors that used to open easily are staying shut. That's not bad luck. It's usually a sign you're being invited to experience something new and some part of you is resisting the invitation. Underneath resistance, there's almost always fear about what it means to let go.
The tricky part is that resistance can be hard to recognize in ourselves. We’re remarkably good at reasoning our way around it. We build a very logical case for why we should keep doing the thing that isn't working. Nervous system science actually backs this up! Your body will default to a familiar stress response, even an uncomfortable one, over an unfamiliar unknown. This is because familiar feels safe to your nervous system, even when it isn't serving you.
Sometimes people don’t shift until they’re pushed hard enough that they no longer have the energy to resist, or life gets difficult enough that resistance is no longer an option. You don't have to wait until you're at the end of the road to start paying attention. You can notice it now, while there's still some ease available.
Where Are You Meeting Resistance?
Notice where you feel the pushback. Are you doing something the same way you always have, only to keep getting results you don't want? Are you working harder at something that keeps pushing against you?
When you find a spot like that, get curious instead of forcing your way through. Ask yourself why you keep doing it this way. Usually, the answer is one of a few honest ones: because it's what you've always known, because you're not sure what else to do, or because some part of you is afraid of what happens if you stop.
You don't need to solve everything in one sitting. Just make a quiet agreement with yourself to notice the resistance when it shows up and let it soften a little.
Resistance isn't a character flaw and it isn't something to fight, it's information. It's your system showing you exactly where you've drifted out of flow, so you know precisely where to turn your attention. Pay attention to it and you'll find your way back.
